Beerwah (pronounced /ˈbɪ:.wa:/ or /ˈbɪə.wa:/) ( 26°51’20″S, 152°57’36″E) is a town on the Sunshine Coast hinterland in Queensland, Australia. It is situated north of the town of Glass House Mountains, approximately 80 km north of Brisbane. Beerwah is most commonly accessed via the newly named Steve Irwin Way (formerly known as the Glasshouse Mountain Tourist Route), off the Bruce Highway. Beerwah is governed by the Caloundra City Council. Beerwah is a growing hinterland town, with the Australia Zoo attraction on its doorstep, and transport links to Brisbane and northbound destinations at Beerwah railway station.
Beerwah has three schools: Beerwah State Primary School, Beerwah State High School, and Glasshouse County Christian College.
Mt Beerwah – the name given to one of the eroded volcanic plugs dubbed the Glass House Mountains by Captain James Cook as the Endeavour plied north along the south-east Queensland coast in 1770 – is now the sentinel standing guard over a chain of national parks which protect unique and fragile flora and fauna.
The town was given the same name, and lies just outside the parks off the hinterland road which parallels the Bruce Highway. The parks, of course, are a major attraction, but Beerwah is also within comfortable driving distance to the Sunshine Coast to the near north and Kilcoy and Lake Somerset to the west.
If you fancy meeting some of the local wildlife, drop in on Steve Irwin’s Australia Zoo for close encounters with tortoises, kangaroos, snakes – including a giant python – and of course crocodiles.
The summit of Wild Horse Mountain presents breathtaking views of this very distinctive south Queensland region.
