Keppel Sands is a town in the Capricornia region of Queensland, Australia. The town is located in the Livingstone Shire Local Government Area, 676 kilometres (420 mi) north west of the state capital, Brisbane. At the 2001 census, Keppel Sands had a population of 333.
Originally known as Sandhills, Keppel Sands was home to a large South Sea Islander community, imported as indentured labourers from various islands in Melanesia and Polynesia in a process known as blackbirding.Today, Keppel Sands is home to many retirees and is a popular location for fishing and crabbing.
Keppel Sands & Joskeleigh on the Capricorn Coast are ideal spots for a quiet relaxing holiday. Fishing, crabbing and gardening are popular hobbies with many retired folk living in these areas.
The Sandhills Community Sports & Social Club run buses for social activities and every Tuesday morning craft classes are held and on Tuesday afternoons residents can try their hands at Bocce (French Bowls).Sunday mornings a sausage sizzle is held following more games of Bocce.
The Coastguard and Rural Fire Brigade play an active part in this close-knit community.
In October 1999 the official opening of the Amenities Block of the Keppel Sandhills Community & Sports Club took place.
