Kaimkillenbun is an Australian town, located 24km from Dalby, on the way to the Bunya Mountains. It is in the local government area of the Wambo Shire Council.
It is recognised as the Queensland town with the longest single name, but is affectionately known by locals as “The Bun”.
Kaimkillenbun was the setting for the Nicole Kidman movie ‘Chase Through the Night’ and it was also the birthplace of Olympic basketballer John Dorge. Facilities in the town include the historic Bun Pub, a primary school and a number of sporting clubs and organisations.
It features an Australian digger in dress uniform standing at ease. His rifle points skyward and a tree stump behind his right leg provides supports.
It was erected by the people of Kaimkillenbun and District in memory of the brave boys who fought and fell in the World’s War 1914-1918. It was unveiled by W J Vowles, Leader of the Opposition, on 13th November 1920, the mason being R C Ziegler. Using original plans the replacement digger was also prepared by Zieglers.
According to the Darling Downs Gazette of 17th November 1920 the statue is substantially placed on a square pedestal about 10 feet (3 metres) in height, the whole being enclosed with a neat fence and forming a noble memorial in honour of the soldiers whose names are inscribed on four tablets on the pedestal.
At the time it was claimed that this was the only war memorial facing west, it being presumed all other memorials faced the east to catch the morning sunrise. However during our tour of Queensland researching war memorials we found them facing all directions, according to the position of streets and parks.
