Yuleba
Postcode: 4427
Yuleba is a town in the Western Downs region of Queensland, Australia. The town is the administrative centre of the Bendemere Shire Local Government Area and is located 420 kilometres west of the state capital, Brisbane along the Warrego Highway. At the 2001 census, Yuleba had a population of 207. The town is said to be named after an Aboriginal word meaning “the place of water lilies”.
Yuleba was established in 1878 and was connected to the railway in 1879. As a railhead for the region to the west, the town was an important centre until the railway was extended again to Roma in 1910. The last Cobb and Co stagecoach run, on 16 August 1924, ran between Yuleba and Surat.[4] Today, Yuleba is the site of a modern mining and processing facility working a high grade silica deposit.
A tiny township on the Warrego Highway 419 km west of Brisbane and 60 km east of Roma, Yuleba is the administrative centre for the Bendemere Shire. It was an important centre for some years prior to 1910 when it was a railway terminus for the area to the west. When the line was extended to Roma and beyond Yuleba declined in importance so that now it is no more than a town of about 300 people on the road from Miles to Roma.
It is said that the word ‘yuleba’ was an Aboriginal word meaning ‘the place of water lilies’ which, in this case, seems plausible as the main attractions in the area consist of Judd’s Lagoon, a beautiful lagoon with both water lilies and a fascinating variety of bird life, and some Aboriginal rock wells which are believed to be hundreds of years old.
