If you want to absorb the dinky-di, Dad and Dave spirit of the Darling Downs, take a detour off the New England Highway just south of Toowoomba and head for Cambooya.
The family of Arthur Hoey Davis, who, under the pseudonym of Steele Rudd, created Dad and Dave and the rest of the crew of the book On Our Selection, eked out a living from its nearby ‘selection’.
Davis, in fact, cemented his ties with the land he and his family knew so well in 1914 when he became the first chairman of the Cambooya Shire – 15 years after introducing the characters of Snake Gully to Australian folklore. There is a memorial to Steele Rudd and his work near the old Davis family property at Greenmount.
Cambooya not only boasts some of the richest farming land on the Downs, but also claims the pick of the regional scenery rich in tranquil horse-riding trails, spectacular views and friendly local pubs. Some highly-regarded thoroughbred studs nestle in the rolling hills.
