Yalata ( 31°23’S, 131°37’E) is the main settlement of the Yalata indigenous Australians. It is on the Eyre Highway in the west of South Australia, 200 km further west from Ceduna, or about a thousand kilometres from Adelaide. The township has a roadhouse and caravan park to assist tourists passing through or visiting the Great Australian Bight for fishing or whale watching. The roadhouse was closed in February 2006, and as of April 2007 had not reopened.

Yalata is governed at the local level by the Aboriginal Council of Yalata, one of the four local government bodies in South Australia classified as Aboriginal Councils (AC). At the state and federal levels, Yalata lies in the electoral district of Flinders and at the division of Grey, respectively.
