Somerset is a town just outside Burnie, Tasmania, Australia. Today the city of Burnie encompasses the entire Burnie-Somerset urban area; however, the town is part of the Waratah/Wynyard municipal area.
It is a basically a combination of a beach town with a service centre for the surrounding industries. There’s a very small shopping area with a Post Office and a Somerset pub. The town centre is literally nothing more than a Police Station, Post Office, General Store and Surgery. Somerset is one of those towns where people have conspired to make the beachfront as inaccessible as possible. The sand dune which runs along the beachfront prevents the houses from having views over the water and there is a railway line which runs along the foreshore.
