Exploring Australia, town by town

Wickham WA

Wickham

Wickham is a working port town in the north of Western Australia near Karratha. Named after John Clements Wickham, Captain of the survey ship Beagle which visited the area in the 1830s, Wickham was established especially to service the needs of the growing mining industry in the 1970s. It is now the ideal town to top up your supplies when visiting the Point Samson Peninsula.

Just out of Wickham, the Cape Lambert iron ore ship loading facility boasts one of the longest and tallest jetties in Australia. View the massive 170 tonne haul truck at Robe’s Visitor Centre. At sunset visit Wickham’s Tank Hill lookout for a view like no other, or walk the secluded pristine sandy beaches around Port Walcott, home of the local Yacht Club.
